Iowa defense spurs rally for 70-63 upset at No. 14 Purdue
Purdue guard P.J. Thompson, center, is trapped by Iowa guard Mike Gesell, left, and guard Peter Jok, right, during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game, January 2, 2016, in West Lafayette, Ind. Iowa won 70-63.
"We used to be aggressive, we used to hawk the basketball", Painter said. "I think they're tougher than (McCaffery's) teams have been".
Rapheal Davis put the loss on his shoulders, stating that "When you see your teammates get frazzled, it comes down to senior leadership", and that he "didn't play that well today... today I let my team down". When you lose games, something about your team was not functional. The Hawkeyes are coming off having knocked off top-ranked Michigan State 83-70 on Tuesday, a game Iowa never trailed in.
And with the report from Indianapolis Star columnist Gregg Doyel that Purdue's all-time leading scorer Rick Mount may be in Mackey Arena after a decades-long absence, they'll need to carry over both their physical and mental improvements. After sharing team-high scoring honors with Perry at MI, the junior guard is averaging 12.2 points a game. In the second half, Iowa was 7 of 9 on 3s and forced 10 turnovers.... "They really took their game to another level". The Boilermakers sank only 8 of 26 second-half field goal attempts and committed 10 of their 14 turnovers after halftime. Aubrey Dawkins scored 13 points for MI. "Just like good things can be contagious, so can bad things". The Hawkeyes led by as many as 19 points en route to their first win over a No. 1 team since beating UConn in 1999.
After Purdue tied it 48, the Hawkeyes answered with five straight points to take control. He made it a point in his speech multiple times to reference the fans, illustrating they're the reason he returned for the ceremony.
The Boilermakers caught fire midway through the first half which featured a 26-5 run fueled by multiple threes by Stephens, Dakota Mathias, and Ryan Cline.
A conference title is also on the minds of the Boilermakers (13-1, 1-0), and at the moment, they're in better shape than the Spartans. F Jarrod Uthoff came in ranked third in Big Ten scoring at 17.6 points....
They matter so much now because while the physical toughness Iowa showed against Michigan State was important, that game was more about the mental side than physical - in part because Denzel Valentine was out.
An 81-68 loss to the Gophers was the beginning of a downward spiral for the Boilermakers, who won just two more regular season games.
Purdue's career scoring leader, Rick Mount, raised his arms, pumped his fists and even pretended to take a shot from midcourt as fans gave him a prolonged standing ovation at halftime. Purdue still held its 13th straight opponent below its season scoring average.
